There seems to be a lot of self-improvement books out there this days-no matter what kind of self-improvement you are looking for!  But, what about those of us who sometimes have a hard time staying motivated?  Or, what about those of us that are easily distracted?  No fear, there is hope for us too!

Self-Improvement Books

All the books on my list are books that I have personally read and feel strongly about.  I have not incorporated every idea they present, but I always take a lot away from them.  And trust me, some of the books here are effective even if you only take only one thing away from it and incorporate it into your life!  I have taken only one idea from one of these books in particular, but HOLLY COW has it made a difference in how I do things!  Can you take a guess which one it is?  Ps-These books are not in any certain order 🙂

My Happiness Project-Rules To Live By

In my journey to make myself happier, I read Gretchen Rubin’s book The Happiness Project (Revised Edition): Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.  This book inspired me to do my own happiness project which I am calling “A New Ending”  This is the second step in my project-“Rules To Live By.”  If you would like to read about my first step, themes, check it out here.

After I created my themes, I decided to move onto my Rules To Live By. These rules are things that will help me get through my project.  These rules are one that I want live by, but whether I keep them or not is another question!!

How To Make the “Rules To Live By”

When making the Rules To Live By, you will want to focus on things that you want live by but are also attainable. This list should be broad enough that it can apply to many situations. Since this list will be pushing you when times get tough, you will need the rules to keep you going.  Take some time to make up these rules, but I found when I got going, they just kept coming.  I have a feeling as though I will probably be adding to these rules as I start my journey!


My Rules:

  1. Who cares what other people think-95% of the time
  2. Money can only help achieve material happiness-if you have the money
  3. A hug can help most sour moods
  4. Silence is golden
  5. My feelings DO matter
  6. Take a picture
  7. Enjoy the present
  8. Take a deep breath…then another
  9. You do not need to control everything
  10. Life is not meant to be perfect
  11. If it doesn’t feel right it probably isn’t
  12. Less is more

Some of my rules are very specific, but most of them can be applied to many situations.

So, go ahead and start thinking about your own rules, which one do you feel most strongly about?
